"DARKNESS FALLS" - Dix Mountain Wilderness, Adirondack State Park, NY - Dix Mountain and the High Peaks from Noonmark, taken at civil twilight.
"THE PHOENIX RISING" - Shoshone National Forest, Wyoming - Cirrus clouds streaking across the sky at sunset. The shapes in the clouds reminded me of the Phoenix, a mythological firebird that has a lifespan of 500 to 1,000 years. When it nears death the Phoenix builds itself a nest out of sticks and then ignites into fierce flames until it is reduced to ashes. A new Phoenix is then reborn and rises from the ashes.
"AFTERGLOW" - Diamond Point, Adirondack State Park, NY - Twilight clouds streaking across the night sky above Lake George, from Diamond Point.
"THE SPIRIT REALM" - Glacier National Park, Montana - Ghostly fog passes over the mountains above Swiftcurrent Lake during a long exposure at sunset.
"STILL DREAMING" - Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado - I set off from the Dream Lake trailhead using a headlamp to guide me to the lake in the dark. After arriving at the lake I scouted around to find an interesting foreground subject to include in my composition. During the dramatic alpenglow stage of sunrise I used a ten stop neutral density filter to cut back the light and achieve a longer exposure for a surreal look.
"GHOSTS OF THE PLAINS" - Theodore Roosevelt National Park, North Dakota - Buffalo moving across the badlands of North Dakota under a star filled night sky, lit by a full moon.
"THE LEONIDS" - Thurman, Adirondack State Park, NY - An hour long exposure over Garnet Lake during the 2009 Leonid Meteor Shower in November.
"TWILIGHT" - Moose River Plains Wild Forest, Adirondack State Park, NY - A long exposure reveals startrails and the colors of twilight streaking over Manbury and Little Moose Mountains on the Cedar River Flow. This image was captured about an hour after sunset from my remote campsite at the head of the flow.
