Snowy krummholtz formations near the summit of Algonquin Peak. Krummholz or Krummholtz comes from the German word meaning crooked or twisted wood. These trees are able to withstand the continual exposure to the fierce, freezing winds, but they do pay a price for their tenacity to survive. As a result growth becomes stunted and the trees become twisted and deformed.
